These are NOT safe for chinchillas. They are not well ventaliated, and chinchillas can easily overheat and die.
Please, do not put buy this for your chinchilla!

Although my chinchilla really enjoys his ball--he goes like crazy all over the family room banging into things and chasing our cat. However, because the plastic is weak, the lid fits very loosely and my 'chilla bangs into everything, the lid came off (even with scotch tape reinforcement) and our family room became Wild Kingdom as the 'chilla was loose and our cat was on the chase. Everyone survived the excitement and now the lid gets reinforced with packing tape when he wants to run about. I haven't had much luck finding another design or manufacturer with a better quality product.

Very good price for the product. Check item when you get it because they use paper to cushion the shippment and it really doesn't protect it from heavy hits during shipping. Packing pillows or something similar would maybe help. I had ordered two and they shipped seperatly. I recieved one without damage and the other had a crack in it. Again I'm sure it is due to the use of paper as cushioning. The one that was cracked, the replacement shipped the day I recieved it and emailed amazon that it was damaged. I simply placed the return label on box and amazon had it picked up the next day from my door step.
Sorry, I got this product for my kids rats and it works great. I had hamsters as a kid and we used electrical tape on the lids which I did right away with these out of habit, I would recommend it for any product like this.

I bought these for my two prairie dogs. Keep in mind that I let them run around in these for 20 minute increments anywhere from 2-5 times a day, so these balls get a lot of wear. The first problem is that the ball does not stay crystal clear. It does start to get so many micro-scratches from rolling on a hard surface (on outside) and from their nails (inside) that within a few weeks that they can hardly see out of the ball and I can hardly see in. Maybe if your house is carpeted, it won't be as much of an issue, but we have mostly hardwood floors (which by the way, it does not appear to scratch the hardwood). Secondly, this depends on your pets chewing habit and ingenuity, our prairie dogs have finally figured out how to get out of the balls by popping/unscrewing the lid off. So I scotch tape the hell out of it. Problem solved....but not for long. The little plastic pieces that slide and lock the lid into place are able to be chewed off from the inside (and they know this juicy detail). Thus, the lid hath no support, except for the tape which stands useless to the strong little boy squirrel; the girl squirrel is so much better behaved and is my little golden child *sniff*, so proud, but I digress. Ultimately, these things go for $25-30 at the pet stores. And if your buying two or more AND having to keep replacing them...well, that adds up to a pretty penny, doesn't it. Make sure you buy them cheaper here or elsewhere because they are not worth more than $20, maybe $15.
For the price, it would be nice if they lasted longer, but so far I have gone through 3-5 of these in the last year because of these issues and the ones they have now are on their last leg. To be fair to my furry little balls of mayhem, I dropped the first two and they cracked with ease. Another con.
The only good thing I would have to say is that it's a delight to clean. I just wish they would make them cheaper or make them better.
