Reassuring Night-Time Presence Jul 20, 2011
By FlockMother Since I have bought this perch about eight months ago, my green-cheeked conure has never slept anywhere else. It has a gradient so that she can select by where she sits how much warmth she gets. It is also very safe, and the rehab Cockatoo hasn't succeeded in destroying it yet (the cord is wrapped in metal). If I bought one for a Cockatoo though, I wouldn't recommend letting them access it much from the exterior of the cage as the metal isn't full-proof. Also, if you unplug it, it takes about an hour to heat back up...so be careful. In addition, the sizing is very vague online. The small size which I ordered is about an inch in diameter...more like my idea of a medium...I would only order a medium for a smaller Cockatoo. These perches are oversized.
Great in theory but several issues Aug 18, 2011
By UGA Lori I bought this perch for my 14 year old Cockatiel. Even though this is the smallest perch and only an inch at it's widest end, it's far too large for her to use comfortably because she couldn't slide along it to get to the opposite end where it is the most narrow.
The other issue is that the perch got too hot and burned both of her feet. After a $94 vet bill to diagnose and treat her feet (she developed a scab/blister on each foot within 2 days of using the perch), I went to Walmart and got a desk lamp that can clamp onto her pen. The heat radiates into her pen from the light bulb but nothing is hot to the touch, so she can't get burnt again. The vet suggested this as an option because if she becomes too hot, she can move away from the heat source, versus sitting on a perch that may overheat while she is trying to hold onto it and getting burnt before she can fly/climb down.
I think this is a great product in theory but I would just caution you to be careful and check your bird's feet often to make sure that they are not being burnt.
