Brackish Dec 12, 2006
By Marke R. Weeks
"Marke"
I'm using this to measure low salinity in brackish tanks and for salt ich treatments. One thing to remember....the directions say rinse Before and After....BUT when you rinse it in tap water, there are many drops of fresh water still in the instrument...if you dip it in tank water and take a measure, you will get a LOW reading....so dump that first sample after a minute or so...Then dip Another sample and you will have an accurate reading every time. This is a very good hydrometer for the money. Many buy expensive refractometers or resistive types which can also deceive you for a number of reasons.

aquarium testing Dec 16, 2010
By D. Pray Works every time but I agree to dump the first test to get rid of the fresh water and do a second test but I would do that with any hydrometer

Used for ocean testing Oct 18, 2006
By Mr. Stuart N. Gow
"StuartinFiji"
We are involved in Marine Assessments in the Fiji Islands and we use this little device for on-site testing. Sometimes on the beach, sometimes on boat sometimes in a mangrove. It gives good enough results in the field to see whether furtehr lab testing should be carried out.
A bit fragile for carrying about, but I don't uppose that matters if you're testing a fish tank in your home!

mine wasn't accurate at all Jan 11, 2012
By Jerry B. Hillman I set up a saltwater tank about 6 months ago and the LFS recommended this hydrometer to me. I was impressed with the accuracy claim so I didn't think twice about shelling out the money for it. When I started using it to check newly mixed water, I kept finding that the salinity level was lower than it should be. 1.020 instead of 1.024 that the water should have came out at. (Instant Ocean Salt Mix) I kept thinking I was doing something wrong. In the end, I discovered with a refractometer that the hydrometer isn't accurate to .001 like it claims. When the hydrometer said my water was at 1.022, the refractometer showed it to actually be 1.027. I lost several hundred dollars in fish due to this piece of junk. Yes, I did rinse it after each use and rinsed it with tank water before each test, and tested twice.
accurate all the time, be sure to rinse between uses Apr 16, 2012
By Mr. Do it All this is a great Hydrometer, what i like most is that its accurate, it can also be used without wetting your hands. a word to the wise is to rinse after each use so the salt water does not crystallize on the gauge and disrupt readings.
