Long Lasting Pump When Maintained Sep 03, 2010
By Pileated I've had these in various sizes, from a tiny fountain pump to the 1800 gph, all the same simple design. They have gotten rather pricey but you do get a rugged, reliable pump for your money. They work well, are surprisingly small (but heavy), and last a long time if you 1) always use a pre-filter of some kind, 2) keep the pre-filter from clogging, and 3) never forget to clean the impeller before storing the pump (see below). My only and very slight criticism of the Pondmaster 1800 is that the discharge is rather small for a pump of this flow rate.
If you shut down your pump for the winter make sure to disassemble and clean it: Remove the impeller housing, carefully pull the impeller out of the motor (it's held in the motor magnetically so you need to pull it out firmly) and clean everything carefully so there is no grit or pond crud on the impeller or inside the motor housing (I use a tooth brush). Neglecting to clean it can result in the pump binding up just long enough to snap the ceramic shaft when you try to start the pump after it has been in storage. Pump warranties don't cover the impeller--- currently ~$27 for the 1800.

A bit deceiving Aug 16, 2011
By Myron K graves This pump claims 1800 gph, but on the box at 0' it states 1500gph. Had they rated it 1500gph, I would have purchased the next size up. The other thing is, I had bought it to fit into my filter box, and with the screen basket attached it is a bit big. The pump is a quiet pump and I am happy with the pump itself. A shorter wider screen would be nice as well.

Fantastic pump Apr 02, 2011
By Tom Gee This pump has power. It's quiet and really moves water. The included inlet screen is nice. I thought I was going to have to buy one separately. Since it's a mag drive unit, it's more energy efficient than other pumps of similar capacity.
Great pump, horrible prefilter Apr 30, 2012
By Ouze Well, as others have said, I found this to be a terrific pump. It's easy to get parts for it when the impeller eventually breaks in a year, as is the way of submersible pumps. It's powerful, doesn't clog easy, and so on.
The real problem is the prefilter it comes with is total garbage. The original one was actually worse - it's essentially 2 pasta strainers which have a threading on one side for the pump. They implode\crush within a day or so. The newer model I have comes with a plastic "cog" that goes in the middle to give some structural strength. Unfortunately they really need to do a redesign, not some after-the-fact hack like this, because it still looks like the Hulk crushed it after a day or two.
The pump is very, very good, but you will need to get a replacement prefilter. If they didn't include a picture of the prefilter; I'd give this 5 stars; but as they prominently display the prefilter in the image I feel it's considered an integral part of the package and must regretfully knock them down to 3 stars.
pumps clean water great, but you gotta keep the filter clear Sep 21, 2010

This is my third Pond Mag Pump (also on my third Little Giant pump) for a 15 year old 5-level series of koi ponds. What i like about the Pond Mag pumps is that in addition to pumping more water to a higher level than the specs say, it is easy to replace the impeller (which is almost the only part that gives out). They also use less electricity than most pumps.
These pumps now come with a foam filter, which works well to keep sediment from getting to the impeller. But you must keep the filter clean! Otherwise sediment will surround it and block off the water flow into and out of the pump. Because my pond has too much mulm and leaf matter floating in it to allow the filter to work adequately more than a few days, i built a cage around it with larger filter material. Now i only need to clean the filter for the pump weekly during the summer.
if you don't have a lot of sediment / mulm, or if you do and build a filter cage to protect this pump, it will work well and long.
